Most people don’t know their ring size. It's one of those things you don’t even think about until suddenly you need to know. And when that moment comes, and you see a perfect ring for your occasion, you are immediately puzzled about the size. If you are in a jewelry shop, it’ll be solved in a minute, as a consultant will measure it for you. But what if you want to buy a ring online?
Luckily, you don't need a jeweler help or special tools. What you need is five minutes, some tools you definitely have at home, and the right technique. We put together this guide to help you find your ring size. Here, you’ll find simple and reliable ways to measure, so when your dream ring arrives, it fits just right.
Why Ring Size Matters
A ring should not be too tight or too loose. You should be able to put it on without effort, and it should sit freely on your finger. If you wear a tight ring, it’s not good for your blood circulation. Plus, you will struggle to remove it. A loose ring that may slip off easily. When you have the right size ring, you will comfortably wear it throughout the day, even if your fingers swell slightly by the evening.
Different countries have different scales for ring sizes. In the United States and Canada, ring sizes are numbered, for example, 5, 6, or 7. In the UK and Australia, they use letters to identify sizes. Many European countries measure a ring’s inner circumference in millimeters. Online stores usually provide international size charts so that you can find the right fit.
Things to Know Before You Measure Your Ring Size
First, a word about why this isn't as simple as it sounds. Your fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold or puff up after salty food. In addition to that, your ring finger size on the left hand is almost certainly different from the same finger on the right hand. The dominant hand is always slightly bigger. It doesn’t mean you will not be able to measure your size. Just remember these rules:
- Measure at the right time. It’s better to measure your fingers in the evening if you want the most accurate fit.
- Check the temperature. Don’t check your size when you are very cold or very hot. Your hands should be at a comfortable, normal room temperature.
- Don’t forget the knuckle. The ring has to slide over your knuckle. Your measurement should be wide enough to pass the widest part of your finger comfortably.
- Size up when in doubt. If you are between two sizes, always choose the larger one. A slightly loose ring is much better than one that is too tight.
3 Methods to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Now, it’s time to tell you how you can easily determine what ring size is yours.
Method 1.The String or Paper Strip Method
This is the oldest and most popular technique that brings very good results if you do everything correctly. You will need a 10-15cm long piece of non-stretchy string (it can even be a thin strip of paper), a pen or marker, a ruler or a measuring tape and a ring size chart.
- Wrap the string or paper around the finger on which you will wear the ring. The string must sit comfortably.
- Mark the place where the string overlaps with a pen. If you use paper, you can simply cut it at the marked point.
- Then, put the string or paper flat against a ruler and measure the length in millimeters. This is your finger's circumference.
- Now, use a ring size chart to convert the measurement to a standard size.
Do not pull the string too tight when measuring your finger. If you stretch it too much, the measurement may be wrong and the ring could end up too loose.
Method 2. Using Your Own Ring
It’s the easiest and fastest way to determine your ring size if you have a ring that fits fine. You will only need a ruler and a set of calipers for the best result.
- You need to put the ring on an ideally flat surface.
- Measure the inside diameter with a ruler (you can find many videos online) in millimeters.
- Now, match this result to a ring size chart. You can also trace the inner circle on paper and compare it to printable charts.
This method is good if you are planning a surprise. You can quietly borrow a ring your partner wears on their ring finger and quickly check what measurement you need to buy.
Method 3. The Printable Sizer
Many jewelers provide a special ring sizer guide that you can print out. This looks like a series of circles that represent different sizes.
- First, print out the sizer. Check that your printer settings are set to 100%. Most guides include a test square (like a 1-inch box) that you should measure with a ruler to confirm the page printed accurately.
- Then match the ring. Place your existing ring over the circles. When the inside of your ring aligns perfectly with the outside of a circle, you’ve found your size.
Tips for Different Ring Styles
Jewelers know one ring size doesn’t fit all styles. The type of ring you choose can affect how it feels on your hand.
- Thin rings (under 3mm). These tend to feel looser. Sterling silver stacking rings or delicate rose gold promise rings often fit true to size or even a quarter size smaller.
- Wide rings (over 6mm). These are usually tighter on a finger. If you’re looking for such a ring, consider going up half a size for comfortable wear.
- Rings with stones. Rings with gems require a bit more care when you put them on. You should choose a size that comfortably goes over the knuckle so you don’t have to force it on.
What to Do If You Are Between Sizes

It happens very often. Let’s say your measurement is between a 7 and a 7.5, and you're not sure which way to go. Here's how to act in this case. If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, you can round up. The ring needs to clear the knuckle, and a slightly looser fit at the base is far better than a ring that won't come off. If your finger is more uniform from base to knuckle, you can round down.
But remember that wide rings are tighter than narrow ones. If you're buying a ring wider than 6mm, it’s better to choose a half a size bigger ring than your usual size.
